It has been a pleasure being your teacher, coach and fellow-learner. Thanks for everything, especially for trying to reach for the gold ring. In the process of completing projects I observed your moments of frustration and confusion. I was so proud when you tried a second way and a third way to design projects that told a compelling story, were easy to understand and interesting.

Who knows what the internet will be like in ten years, but I am confident that your knowledge of computer applications, web 2.0 tools and habits of learning will be a useful support in the years to come.

Students in the United States are trying to stop the spread of Malaria.

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by protozoan parasites. It is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Each year, there are approximately 515 million cases of malaria, killing between one and three million people, the majority of whom are young children in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Malaria parasites are transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes.

10 Step Star Wars

Create a background.
Create a new layer.
Make a text box with your first line of text in it.
Insert a keyframe at 80.
Use free transform to shrink and move the text to where you want it to be at its end.
Repeat steps 2-5 for your other lines of text each with its first keyframe 25 frames after the one before it.
Go online and find music.
Right-click and save to your file.
Go to Flash again and go to File > Import > Import to Library > Select the music file and hit okay.

In our last communication Yahoo had plans to restructure and become more like Facebook and other social sites. Now Microsoft has offered share holders a lot on money $44 billion to purchase Yahoo. A Space for Creativity

Some environments seem to promote creativity. An artist’s studio, a pottery studio, a kitchen, and hopefully a writer’s desk come to mind. The class was very observant about how they create an environment for learning:

Jesse said, What helps me is by looking at scenery and just drawing it.
Kelsey said, When i take notes they arent very helpful at that tiem and place but later on i usually go back to them and use them for guidlines.
Lauren said, Thinking or drawing always helps me understand things much better.
Ariel said, I can always draw in my old sketchbook if I want too, or I can use my computer and write in a word document to get my thoughts down on paper.
Autumn said, When I'm most creative when I'm listening to music in my room.
Brendon said, Most of these places are eerie places such as cemetaries, or in the woods at night. I also get inspiration believe or not from places such as churches or any sacred place like that

Jacob said, Although it is hard to explain, I believe that nature is the best cultivator for the mind.
Jay said, I think that people are the most creative in the places that they are most comfortable. I also like to write in my spiral notebook.

Jeremy Z. said, Sometimes I realize that I write my best work when I am inspired by some sort of recent event, particularly a tragedy. For example, for my English class, we were given an assignment to do one of various things to write a two-page entry in our journals, but for mine, a great deal of ideas ran through my head.
John said, I have a cool pen made 100% of blue glass, that you dip in ink to write with, and a really cool green leather notebook, that really help my creative side come out.
Katherine said My house is a good place for me to be creative. My basement is very quiet and away from any distractions.

Internet heavyweights like Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, and Facebook may not be major corporations on the internet in the future. In many ways it is survival of the fittest. They are competitors.

In your post restate the business plan for Yahoo that may help it remain an internet leader. Discuss whether you think this plan will be successful. Be specific. Write in your own words do not copy and paste from the internet. Your post should be a few paragraphs. You may have a quote from the Times article. Include a small appropriate image, links that support your opinions ( linked to words in a sentence).

Sometimes a moment of creativity is supported by your immediate environment. Think about it. Do you need to be in a special place or special time of the day. Do certain pads of paper or markers or pens help you write a story or design a webpage. Does taking notes in a special pad help in the creative process?

From Frustration to Learning

As we begin 2008, it is a good time to look back and find those ahah moments. Yes, there were many moments of frustration. Yes, there were times when you couldn’t create an interesting opening paragraph. Yes, the HTML coding didn’t always create the tables that you wanted. But I would like for you to remember how you solved those problems and went from frustration to satisfaction. In your blogs please describe those times of frustration and how you learned to solve those problems. Use specific examples to describe those ahah moments.

Another site is the Hungersite.com At this site you can contribute to reducing the problems of breast cancer, abuse toward animals and global warming. My 15 year old boy, Evan Trembley, is missing. He has been missing for now two weeks.

Maybe if everyone passes this on, someone will see this child. That is how the girl from Stevens Point was found by circulation of her picture on tv. The internet circulates even overseas, South America , and Canada etc. Please pass this to everyone in your address book. With G-D on his side he will be found.

Today we talked about the proper code for putting images onto a webpage. Be careful to check the code for bugs! Otherwise, not all your pictures may show up. The class had to create a webpage through Notepad, and code 5 images. You should try to practice changing the colors of the background and changing the size of the text as a refresher.

Blogging has many advantages---developing your own ideas, publishing your ideas, and communicating with people in other cities and countries. However it needs to be done safely.
YouTube has a number of videos about blogging in an inappropriate manner. Click on the small images on the lower left to view the videos. You may have to view these at home since they might be blocked in school.

Classroom Rules for Blogging

your posts and comments will be on the internet; they should be polite, respectful, positive and mature.
never use your last name or communicate where you live
your point of view should be presented in a polite manner
do not post a picture of yourself
do not post your phone number
blogs should be written in your own words
blogs usually have links to give the read additional information
blogs usually have an image in the post
some students write a short outline before they write in their blog
review your blog before you publish it
your blog should be about what we are learning in class

Other teachers have been blogging with their classes for a few years. Their ideas about safe blogging are important. Bud Hunt and Darren Kuropatwa ( see post from 9/7/2007) have many suggestions.

The Beginning

Welcome to the class of 2011!.. It is September...Your First Week in High School...A New Beginning...I look forward to working with you this year. By next week you will be designing your first webpage using Notepad. Sometimes there will be bugs in the programs that you (Matt Penning)
create. It takes effort to correct them. Frustration is usually a part of the learning process. This is natural. All superior work requires effort.

Learning continues after the school day. Please look at the HTML Tutorial to learn additional tags. If you can think of a project that will combine the work of another class and this class, please let me know.

This is the class blog. Next week you will create an account with Google and create your own Blogger account.
